The Daviess County Landfill is accepting 800-900 tons of garbage per day.
Over time, bacteria will break down the organic material in trash to produce Landfill gas (LFG), a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, and other compounds. The Landfill is required to collect LFG and to either flare it or use it for energy.
Site Supervisor Bob Root says 21 wells have been added to capture more gas. In the near future, new caisson wells will be installed to pull gas off the new contained cell.
