New Projects Planned for Grimes Avenue Transfer Station

Daviess County Fiscal Court has approved contracts with Axiom Architecture for the design of a new office building and concrete pad at the Grimes Avenue Transfer Station.

Both projects are part of the Phase I $1.7 million HDR master plan, designed to modernize the facility and improve operational efficiency.

Since 1994, the Transfer Station has been the primary destination for solid waste in the City of Owensboro.  The construction of a new concrete pad will allow for the facility to resume accepting Construction & Demolition Debris (CD&D) in the future.

“Whenever the Transfer Station was no longer able to accept CD&D and everything had to go to the Landfill, I know that was an increased expense for contractors and also it’s one of the things we have battled against with added trash along our roadways,” said Commissioner Chris Castlen.

“We’ve been able to find a way to bring it back to the Transfer Station for the Home Builders and whoever is doing construction with a location that is easier to access, fewer flat tires, and less trash on the roads,” he added.

Matthew Purcell is the owner/operator of Owensboro Insulators.

“It has been a challenge for our businesses and we thank you for the work you’ve done to meet us in the middle and find a resolution, so we can get back to saving money on doing business,” Purcell told the Court.

Adam Hicks, representing the Home Builders Association, said the change would save local contractors time and money, which could be passed onto homeowners and businesses that use their services.

Construction & Demolition Debris will not be accepted at the Transfer Station until after the work is complete and that timeline is still to be determined.
